The Rice Aquatic Center is proud to offer the American Red Cross Learn-to-Swim Program. Our Learn-to-Swim Program is structured to promote water familiarization, safety, correct stroke technique and personal development within an enjoyable and safe environment. All of our instructors are Red Cross certified or trained by certified instructors to teach people of all ages and abilities. Registration is open to those affiliated with Rice University, as well as the community.
All of our class levels have the option of 8 classes during the week or 5 classes on Saturdays. Our Parent & Me and Aqua Tots classes are always 25 minutes in length to keep the young children engaged. The Learn-to-Swim levels and Adult classes are 35 minutes for weekday classes and 40 minutes for Saturday classes.Â
Class times are subject to change.

First Day: Non-members must present a printed copy of their registration receipt at the Operations Desk to enter the Recreation Center. Members should have their membership ID ready to present on entry. There will be a quick orientation to our program on the first day; please make plans to attend this. Non-members will receive a Swim Lesson Pass via email.
Attendance: You are responsible for being on time to all class sessions. If your student is late, the instructor(s) will not schedule a makeup session. All participants should come dressed in their bathing suits and bring towels.
Inclement Weather: We do not cancel class for inclement weather. We will conduct safety training and other swimming related instruction indoors instead of in-water class. If there is more than one bad weather day during one week there will be an additional class offered. For weekday sessions a class will be offered the following Friday; for Saturday sessions the participants will be contacted about an additional class opportunity.Â
Refunds: We do not issue refunds. There are no make-ups for missed classes.
Cancellation of classes:
• Each class has a limit due to participant/instructor ratios.
• Cancellations of classes occur 2 business days before class starts, if there are not at least 3 registered.
• There are no refunds for classes. If class is cancelled a voucher good for up to 1 year can be issued at the participant’s request.
Healthy swimming: We ask all parents to help us keep our pools healthy and safe for all users. In order to do this, we ask that all patrons with kids:
• Change garments and diapers in a bathroom, never on deck.
• Wash your child thoroughly (especially the rear end) with soap and water before swimming.
• Never swim or allow your child to swim with diarrhea.
• Any bodily-fluids dispersed into the swimming pool will require the pool to be closed for a minimum of 30 minutes.
Sun block: For summer classes we STRONGLY encourage sun block. Please apply sun block at home, so it will absorb and be more effective.
Parents: We encourage parents to stay and watch their child; however, we do not encourage parental involvement during the lessons (except the Parent & Me class). We ask that you watch your child from the tables and chairs section. Unless observers have a Rec Center membership, they are not permitted to use the Recreation Center.
Appropriate attire: Swim diapers are required on all children who are not potty trained. Only bathing suits or attire made of bathing suit material is allowed in our pools. Cotton products are not allowed, if greater coverage is desired, the garments must be made of lycra, nylon or polyester. The lifeguards and the instructors have the ultimate decision on what is acceptable and what is not. Children with long hair must tie their hair back or wear a swim cap. If it is necessary to change at the facility, please arrive several minutes early for the scheduled class, but no more than a half an hour.
Locker rooms: There are locker rooms directly attached to the facility for your use during lessons. If children of the opposite sex over the age of 5 need assistance in the locker rooms please let your instructor know. We have a family bathroom located next to the men’s locker room for added convenience.
Class Level: The teaching staff will evaluate the skills of the children during the first class and reclassify them as necessary. The instructors have the ultimate discretion on which class level is best for a youth and have the right to switch a child into a higher or lower class level. Please be aware that although your child’s swimming ability and comfort in the water will improve, we do not guarantee that your child will pass each level in accordance with Red Cross standards. Each child will receive a report card at the end of lessons detailing their progress and any areas they make need to work on.
Personal Items: Please properly label all toys, goggles, towels, and other items brought onto the deck, as we cannot be responsible for lost or stolen items. No food or outside footwear is permitted near the pool, drinks are allowed in plastic bottles with re-sealable tops.Â
Instructors: If you feel a swim instructor or other Rec Center staff does not provide a sufficient level of
customer service, please contact Courtney Hill, the Aquatics Director at firstname.lastname@example.org . All patrons are encouraged to fill out an evaluation form on our website at the completion of the session.
Paid Parking: The North Annex lot at Entrance 20 is most convenient for parking for our programs if you do not have a Rice parking permit. This lot is $1.00 per 12 minutes with an $11.00 maximum per day. Access is granted by inserting a credit card and then inserting that same card to pay when you are exiting.
• Please be aware that events may be held on campus during our programs and this can cause traffic and parking issues. We apologize for the inconvenience and urge you to plan ahead. For maps and more information, please visit this website: http://parking.rice.edu/
