To uphold new physical distancing standards, the Rec Center will only grant access to a certain number of people at a time. Members can reserve one workout per day, starting five calendar days in advance, using our internal reservation system. For step by step instructions, click https://recreation.rice.edu/reserve. Time slots will be reserved on a first come, first served basis. Individuals may only make a reservation with a current Rec Center membership. If you are an active Rice Staff/Faculty Member or graduate student without a membership, you must purchase a membership before attempting to reserve a spot here.
No guests are allowed at this time.
Beginning Tuesday, November 2, Rec Center members will be able to sign up as early as 2 days in advance and up to one hour before a time slot. Members will also be able to cancel reservations up to 3 hours before their scheduled time slot.
Membership to the Barbara and David Gibbs Recreation Center is available for purchase to faculty, staff, retirees, and graduate students of Rice University as well as to their spouse/domestic partner. Summer memberships are also available for additional fees to graduate and undergraduate students. Membership to the Recreation Center for undergraduate students is included with their semester payments to the University.

If signing up for payroll deduction through Esther, no membership application is needed.
Cancellation forms may be submitted through email, als5@, or campus mail, MS-523.
Faculty and staff may sign up for payroll deduction through Esther or may choose to pay in full at the Recreation Center Administrative Office.
Payroll Deduction steps: Login to Esther. Enter your user ID (E#) and pin. Click on the Recreation Center Enrollment listed near the bottom of the main menu. Select your membership type: individual membership, individual plus one, or a family membership. Click "Select" and your membership will be activated within 24-48 hours.
Pay In Full steps: Complete an application for membership between 8:30am - 4:30pm (Monday through Friday) in the Recreation Center office on the second floor. Acceptable methods of payment are Visa, Mastercard, American Express, or personal check. Checks should be made payable to Rice University.
The Rec Center fee will be charged at a rate of $54/semester, and students will be given the choice to opt out for the 2021 spring semester. The form to opt out will be open/accepting submissions until 11:59 p.m. on Friday, January 22, 2021. Students who choose to opt out WILL NOT have access to either the virtual offerings or on campus facilities. As of 11:59 p.m. on Friday, January 22, the Undergraduate Membership Opt-Out Form for the 2021 spring semester is now closed.
Graduate Students can now purchase Gibbs Recreation Center Memberships through the Recreation Center Marketplace or memberships may be paid for in the Recreation Center Administrative Office.
Acceptable methods of payment are Visa, Mastercard and eCheck. ***To obtain a spouse/domestic partner membership you must first obtain a Rice ID card for your spouse/domestic partner at the Rice campus police. You may not purchase a single membership for your spouse/domestic partner. A graduate student must purchase a membership for themselves and then add a spouse/domestic partner membership to their cart.

Prior to purchasing a membership, please note that certain areas may not be available at all times and all schedules are subject to change without notice, to accommodate university events and programs. A complete schedule of operating hours, including reduced hours during holidays and academic recesses, is available online or at the Operations Desk. Check class and activity postings in the main lobby and throughout the building to avoid any conflicts and inconveniences.
All members MUST PRESENT either their Rice University or Recreation Center Member ID Card when using any of the Recreation Center's indoor and/or outdoor facilities. Use of the playing fields must be scheduled in advance, and the applicable rental fee must be paid. It is necessary to have the ID card with you at all times as it MUST BE PRESENTED to check out any equipment. Your ID card is non-transferable. If an ID card is presented by anyone other than the owner whose name appears on the card, it will be retained and all privileges revoked.
