Special Events and Workshops
From time to time, the Rice Recreation Center and Fitness Programs will host Continuing Education classes. Designed to get the Houston community involved in continuing fitness education, as well as for aspiring Group Fitness instructors, the Fitness Programs offers these classes to the general public and the Rice community. You do not have to be a member of the Rice Recreation Center to participate in these clinics or workshops.
All programs listed below take place at Rice University. Please see the map for the specific location on campus.

AFAA Primary Group Exercise Certification Workshop
The AFAA Primary Group Exercise Certification Workshop provides aspiring group exercise instructors the training and background necessary to take the AFAA Primary Group Exercise
Certification exams. The AFAA Primary Group Exercise Certification Workshop provides a review of AFAA's Basic Exercise Standards
and Guidelines, anatomy, exercise science, exercise evaluation and exam
criteria. The day concludes with the practical and written exams.
Prerequisites: Early registration, self-study
before program and group exercise teaching experience. Current CPR/AED
certification required before certificate is issued.
Includes: Study guide
(shipping additional), one-day review, written and practical exams, one-year
AFAA membership or extender, including a print or digital subscription to
American Fitness magazine.

ACSM Health Fitness Specialist Certification Workshop
This is the exclusive workshop of the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM), and is delivered by Fitness Education Network for participants who are interested in attaining the ACSM Health Fitness Specialist® credential. The ACSM Health Fitness Specialist® (HFS) is a professional qualified to assess, design, and implement individual and group exercise and fitness programs for apparently healthy individuals and individuals with controlled disease. The HFS is skilled in evaluating health behaviors and risk factors, conducting fitness assessments, writing appropriate exercise prescriptions, and motivating individuals to modify negative health habits and maintain positive lifestyle behaviors for health promotion. The HFS Certification provides professionals with recognition of their practical experience and demonstrated competence as a leader of health and fitness programs in the university, corporate, commercial or community settings in which their clients participate in health promotion and fitness-related activities.
All of the following requirements must be met:
- A minimum of a bachelor's degree in Exercise Science, Exercise Physiology or Kinesiology from a regionally accredited college or university. (Candidates are eligible for the HFS certification exam if in the last term or semester of the degree program.)
- Current Adult CPR/AED (with hands-on practical skills component)
