• Certification Courses

    General information for all courses
    • You must wear a swim suit in class.
    • A one piece suit or thick strapped athletic two piece for females is required.
    • Goggles are highly recommended for the prerequisite swimming test. For Lifeguarding goggles are not allowed during the brick dive on the first day or after the first class day, if you wear contacts please plan accordingly.
    • Snacks are allowed and recommended.
    • Certification candidates must attend every session at the times listed by the facility. Failure to attend the entire class will result in a failing grade and no refund. Attendance in the course does not guarantee certification; candidates must pass written and practical exams.
    • Do not be late. Part of being a professional American Red Cross Lifeguard or Water Safety Instructor is being on time. Being late could result in termination from the class and financial consequences.
    • The Rice Recreation Center is not responsible for any lost or stolen items. We suggest leaving valuables (cell phone, wallet, etc.) at home or renting a day use locker to secure items.
    • All cell phones must be put away and turned off or set to silent during class.

  • LIFEGUARDING COURSE

  • Lifeguarding Certification

    This courses prepares candidates to recognize and respond quickly and effectively to aquatic emergencies and prevent drowning and other incidents. After successful completion of the course, participants will receive the following certifications: Lifeguard Training (2 years), First Aid (2 years), Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) for The Professional Rescuer (2 years) and Automated External Defibrillator (AED) (2 years).

    Session 2

    Dates: November 4 – 6

    Times: Friday 5:00 - 8:00 p.m., Saturday 10:00 a.m. - 5:30 p.m. and Sunday 10:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. There will be one 45 min. meal break each day.

     *Registration deadline for Session 2 is Friday, October 28th.

    Fees include instruction, certification, facilities and materials.

    Rice Student- $150. This fee may be WAIVED if all the requirements are met. See the Waiver tab for details.  

    For Blended Learning Lifeguard courses, Rice students will not owe anything at registration. Following the prerequisite swim test on the first day, Rice students will be charged $35 if the test is not satisfactorily completed. 

    Non Rice Student- $225.

    For Blended Learning Lifeguard courses, a deposit of $30 will be due at registration. Following the prerequisite swim test on the first day, the remaining $195 will be due. 

    Waiver Requirements

    You must be enrolled in at least 6 hours at Rice University to qualify.

    • Passing the Lifeguard course and earning a Lifeguard certification does not guarantee employment. Students must attend a scheduled hiring session with the Aquatics Director. If the student does not attend a hiring session, the student will owe the full course fee of $150.

    • Students must commit to working for the Rice Recreational Aquatic Center.

    Prerequisite Swimming Skills Evaluation (During First Class)

    Participants must be at least 15 years of age by the last day of class. Those under 18 must provide identification.

    The first class day will consist of the prerequisite swimming skills evaluation. Satisfactory completion of the skills must be achieved in order to take the course and become certified. If not satisfactorily completed, the participant will not be able to continue in the course and the participant will lose $35.

    The prerequisite swimming skills evaluation consists of:
    • A 300 yard continuous swim (not timed): front crawl and breaststroke.
    • A 2 minute tread, without the use of arms or hands. 
    • Swim 20 yards using front crawl or breaststroke, surface dive 7-10 ft, retrieve a 10-pound brick, return to the surface and swim back 20 yards to the starting point. Goggles cannot be worn. Must be completed within 1 minute and 40 seconds.

    This is a Blended Learning course you are expected to complete readings and assignments outside of the in-class time. If you fail to complete readings or assignments on time you will not be able to continue in the course and you will not receive a refund. Before the first day of class you will need to read lessons 1-6 and complete assignments for lessons 1-4. This means you must bring with you to the first day of class your printed progress reports for lessons 1-4. Once you register you will receive more information about the Lifeguarding manual and the online assignments.

  • WATER SAFETY INSTRUCTOR COURSE

  • Water Safety Instructor (WSI) Certification

    Whether you want to splash around with kids and teach them to swim, help children and adults refine their strokes or teach diving safety techniques, you can do it as an American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor.

    Rice Student- $180. This fee may be WAIVED if all the requirements are met. See the Waiver tab for details.  

    For Blended Learning WSI courses, Rice students will not owe anything at registration. Following the prerequisite swim test on the first day, Rice students will be charged $30 if the test is not satisfactorily completed. 

    Non Rice Student- $275.

    For Blended Learning WSI courses, a deposit of $30 will be due at registration. Following the prerequisite swim test on the first day, the remaining $245 will be due. 

     

    Waiver Requirements

    • Passing the Water Safety Instructor course and earning a WSI certification does not guarantee employment. Students must attend a scheduled hiring session with the Aquatics Director. If the student does not attend a hiring session, the student will owe the full course fee of $180.

    • Students must commit and work a minimum of 2 semesters for the Rice Recreational Aquatic Center. If the student resigns from instructing or is terminated before 2 semesters have been completed, the student will owe the full course fee of $180.

    Prerequisite Swimming Skills Evaluation (During First Class)

    Participants must be at least 16 years of age by the last day of class. Those under 18 must provide identification.

     

    The first class day will consist of the prerequisite swimming skills evaluation. Satisfactory completion of the skills must be achieved in order to take the course and become certified. If not satisfactorily completed, the participant will not be able to continue in the course and the participant will lose $30.

     

    Demonstrate swimming skills consistent with the Stroke Performance Charts, Level 4, by swimming the following strokes:

    Front Crawl - 25 yards

    Back Crawl - 25 yards

    Breaststroke - 25 yards

    Elementary Backstroke - 25 yards

    Sidestroke - 25 yards

    Butterfly - 15 yards

    Maintain position on back for 1 minute in deep water (floating or sculling)

    Tread water for 1 minute
